Precious & Treasured – Gem Care Tips

Tips to Take Care of Gems

Every Gemstone or gemstone jewellery has an emotional connect with it and preserving these emotions, memories and love is important. So everyone who adores their beautiful and precious gemstone jewellery must follow certain guidelines to preserve the quality and shine of their gemstones.

If you often wear ornaments studded with gemstones, there are high chances of some stones losing their setting and form. Therefore, you need to regularly check your stone trinkets to ensure that the prongs holding the stones are not worn down.

Perfumes, hairsprays, cosmetics, lotions, etc. are very harmful to your gemstone jewellery, irrespective of whether it is made of gold, white gold or platinum. So, it is important that you place your gem-studded trinkets away from your cosmetics box.

Chlorinated water can damage the Gemstones and deteriorate their texture and quality. So, before swimming, make sure, you remove your gemstone jewellery.

You should keep your gemstone jewellery away from any household item containing bleach, chlorine and other strong oxidizers.

Sudden temperature changes and extreme heat can impact a precious stone’s colour and durability. So, always make sure, you keep your gemstones away from sunlight and heat.

Every gemstone has a different degree of hardness, so you should store each gem separately. If you store all the ornaments together, your ruby ring may rub against your pearl string, thereby causing damage to the latter. The best way out is to store them in separate compartments of your jewellery box with fabric lining. You can even store them in different pouches. Keep in mind that some gems like opals and pearls draw moisture from the air.

All precious and semi-precious stones must be cleaned frequently. Most stones respond well to mild detergent and warm water. Scrub them using a soft brush with soft bristles. Avoid scrubbing too hard; else you may end up scratching the stone. Rinse the stone and shake or blow on the jewellery piece to remove excess liquid, then dry it gently with the help of a soft pure cotton cloth.
